M. Copeland
Melvin Copeland (born 1797 in Sturbridge MA, died 1866) was the brother of Daniel and Alfred Copeland.
He probably apprenticed with Leonard Kennedy, Sr.and then was partner with Daniel in D & M Copeland from 1822-25.
Between 1826-30 he made planes with Alfred in Hartford as M. & A. Copeland.
Between 1831-42 he used the “A & A1” imprints in Hartford. In 1842 he moved his firm to Huntington
MA where he was joined by Daniel and Alfred.
He was listed in the 1849 New England Mercantile Union directory as a plane manufacturer in Cummington,
MA. He was listed in the 1850 census as a manufacturer in Huntington.
In the 1850 Industrial census he employed 15 hands using water power planers, circular saws,
lathes and producing planes worth $12,000.
Plane irons cost $3,000 and beech and Turkish boxwood cost $3,000.
By 1855 the firm was succeeded by Copeland & Co.
